Gauzy rank number one in the cadet boys single competition proved his righteous position in the final when he defeated the second seeded Soderlund. The match was fairly even but French Gauzy had the upper hand and won in a five set match. His representative co-player Robinot played against German Floritz in a very exciting match full of dramatic moments.

The most dramatic match of all the singles semi-final matches took place on table number 4 between the junior girls Szczerkowska – Pettersson. Polish Szczerkowska took the lead 3:0 after three very equal sets. Swedish Pettersson stole the last set for herself in the final few balls and she seemed much more confident in the next two sets. She took a time out in the fifth set the score being 2:5 and she won the set. She dominated the game in the sixth set and added the third point to her score, levelling to 3:3. Szczerkowska kept her hopes up even after the three lost sets in a row Szczerkowska stepped into the last set with high spirits and took the lead 5:2 as in the fifth set. Pettersson gradually caught up playing from the back of the court. Szczerkowska came out luckier in the end of the match a won the lost set 13:11 giving a perfect performance in a 4:3 match. Pesotska, who escaped in the nick of time in the quarterfinal, chose good tactics against Madarasz and brought the match to a victorious end.

The Czech spectators were foremost expectant of the quarterfinal cadet girls match between Czech Slehobrova and Romanian Szosc and the quarterfinal junior boys match between Czech Sirucek and French Robinot.

In the junior boys round of sixteen we kept a close eye on the last Czech representative in the category, 8th ranked Pavel Sirucek. He stood up against the Swedish Oversjo, 16th rank. The Czech was therefore the favourite going into the match but he didn’t underestimate his opponent. The Swedish player played very well in the doubles and for Sirucek it was a step into the unknown. The Czech coach Pavel Spacek and Sirucek chose the right tactics which Sirucek had no problems keeping: “During the first set I was getting used to the Swedes spins which were unpleasant. It was important to play the first topspin slower and push the opponent past his abilities. He played half-long balls, this suited me and it was easy for me to start attacking. ” The Czech player won 4:1.

The programme of the main competition on Saturday began with the cadet girls followed by the cadet boys. 13 of the top 16 ranked players made it into the quarterfinal with the number 17 ranked Tomanova (CR) and number 18 ranked Djurcik (SRB) and the 46th Slehobrova (CR).

We are coming close to the final days of the competition. As we have only two days to go the players are getting restless as they are aware of the expectations they came here to fill. The matches today were fast and there was a constant bustle in the O2 Arena.

Players in full swing
The championship continued today with the singles and doubles competition. We have gotten into the third round of the cadet and junior mixed doubles and just started the first round of all the singles after yesterday’s qualification matches. The top ranked players have all made it into the fourth round of the mixed doubles tomorrow.

The golden matches began with the cadet team category at 16:30 followed by the juniors at 19:00. The floor was clear of people except the four competing teams and coaches. The cadet girls and boys stepped into the arena to a warm welcome from the spectators. The Swedish and French fans were the loudest as they had both teams in the boys section. And so aller, aller could be heard throughout the hall along with the Swedish siren celebrating each victory set.

Today the teams fought for medal positions. After three days of pressure they faced the ultimate test in physical and mental strength and in team spirit. The third and fourth positions were decided before midday in both the cadet and the junior teams category. The gold and silver positions will be decided in the afternoon once all other matches have ceased.

The afternoon here in the arena was filled with hopefull semifinalists. We saw eight matches between top teams all hoping to secure a place in the gold final. Teams marched out onto the sports battle field with straight minds set to their only task.

The fourth day of the championship unfolded in the name of quarterfinal battles. We saw many nerve wrecking games. Today was the deciding day for four teams and everyone gave it their best to continue on to medal positions. The arena was filled with cheers from fans and yells of encouragment from team members.

The third day of the European Youth Championship focused on the teams round of sixteen. The crucial matches began early afternoon and by eight o'clock all the results were in. We saw tears of joy and bitterness from teams continuing in the fight for the medal positions and from teams whose hopes were crushed. After today's matches it would be a surprise to everyone if France wouldn't be in the finals in at least one of the categories.
